The number of skills each character can have is limited by the fixed amount of Skill Points. Every player character in SWG has 250 skill points available.
Each profession is divided into 4 branches of 4 skill boxes, besides the "Novice" and "Master" box. Each box costs a given number of skill points. Examples :
- Novice Marksman box = 15 skill points
- Medical Support III box = 4 skill points
- Master Chef box = 2 skill points
When a player wants to acquire a new skill box, he needs to have enough skill points available. Though there is no way to acquire more skill points than the fixed amount of 250, all skills can be surrendered at any time, by using the skill window. When a character surrenders a skill, he gets the skill points back and can use them for other skills. This very versatile system allows a lot of flexibility and freedom in the career of SWG characters, unlike many other RPG where you can not change your class after having created your character.
Note: the pilot professions included with the Jump to Lightspeed expansion do not require any skill points.
